Internship in Architecture Program (IAP)

The IAP is a pathway to licensure as an Architect in Canada. To become an Intern member of the AANB, an individual must:

• Have graduated with a professional degree in architecture or have successfully completed the RAIC Syllabus Program
• Have received academic certification from the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) – www.cacb.ca. This is the institution responsible for assessing the educational qualifications of all architectural graduates and certification is required to be eligible to apply to the IAP.
• Be a person of good character
• Submit a completed application for Intern Membership and pay the required fees.

In keeping with the IAP, the AANB requires that all Intern members select their Mentor prior to recording architectural experience in the Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB). The Mentor can be a licensed Architect or Retired Member of the AANB and must be independent of the Interns place of employment.

The Mentor should be willing to support an Interns professional growth and offer guidance. The AANB has developed Guidelines for the Supervising Architect and Mentor.

Once the Intern selects their Mentor, the completed Mentor Confirmation Form must be submitted to the AANB.

When can you start recording?

Interns may only begin recording their experience after they have obtained intern status with the AANB.

Items of note:

• All experience must be recorded in the online Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB) and approved by the Supervising Architect and Mentor.
• A minimum of 3,720 hours in specific categories must be completed in an acceptable employment situation.
• See the IAP Manual and Appendix B for details on currency of experience requirements, submission timeline requirements, penalties, etc.

Completion of the 3 modules of the AANB Admissions Course is a mandatory requirement for interns in their pathway to licensure as an Architect. All members are welcome to access this CE opportunity and the AANB will issue completion certificates once we have received confirmation of completion.

Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC)

The Provincial/Territorial Architectural Licensing Authorities in Canada (Licensing Authorities) have the mandate to ensure both public safety and professional skilled delivery of architectural services in their respective jurisdictions. Mechanisms have been established to ensure the competence of architects, both when they enter the profession and throughout their professional careers. The licensing/registration examination is one of these mechanisms.

In 2006, the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA), the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) agreed to develop a new Canadian licensing/registration examination, over which they would have complete control, including its development, updates and administration.

The Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC) which, to date, all of the Canadian Licensing Authorities have adopted, was developed to test the minimum standards of competency acquired by an Intern during the Internship period, to ensure both public safety and the professional and skilled delivery of architectural services.

The ExAC has been offered since 2008.

Examination Format

The ExAC is comprised of four (4) sections and covers the following subject areas noted on the ExAC website – www.exac.ca.

It is important to note that this is a practice-based examination and experience gained in the identified subject areas is essential.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for licensing with the AANB, an individual must:

• Complete the education requirement
• Complete the experience requirements as noted in the IAP
• Successfully complete all four (4) sections of the ExAC
• Successfully complete all sections of the AANB admissions course
• Submit a completed application for licensing with the AANB.

OR

• Be licensed/registered by a reciprocal Canadian provincial or territorial architectural regulatory association and submit a completed application for licensing with the AANB.

OR

• Be licensed/registered by a reciprocal state licensing board in the USA and submit a completed application for licensing with the AANB.

Only those licensed as Architects with the AANB may:

• Use the title “Architect” in New Brunswick
• Use the designation “AANB”
• Be eligible to apply for a certificate of practice.
