The Town of Sackville, considered a cultural centre within the region, recognized the need for a multi-functional Emergency Response Services and Town Hall Facility. Of utmost importance was an inspiring, artful architectural design that could evoke a feeling of pride and accessibility for town residents, push the boundaries of energy efficiency, and make a significant contribution to the urban fabric of the community while serving as a new anchor point in the Town.

The result is a true work of architectural art, true to the roots of the Sackville culture and community. A unique decorative art treatment is visible from the exterior, created by overlapping planes of curved aluminum rods representing the abundant natural reeds found in the popular Sackville Waterfowl Park and local marshes. This motif has been carried into the interior porcelain tile, acoustic panels, floor and wall patterning. Smooth, locally sourced, cut beige and rough split red sandstone is used for the exterior, giving the building a true New Brunswick feel. The same stone is carried to the entrance and lobby interiors, perfectly complimenting the light and naturally lit interior design.

The development of the ‘Art Decoratif’ inspired reed screens and interior design motifs are a reflection of the building committee and community interest, which inspired a public art competition that produced unique photographs, sculptures, and art pieces displayed throughout the facility. Furthermore, the facility is designed to be highly sustainable by incorporating energy efficient technologies, including an accessible green roof terrace, rainwater storage to wash fire trucks, geothermal, in-floor radiant heat, daylight using skylights, interior floor and wall borrowed lights, selective self-cleaning glazing, and solar hot water panels.

This architectural design evokes pride in its community, and has truly become a piece of home for Sackville residents.
